Noah Thomas Miller with the Nice Art Grant
This year, we offered our second annual Nice Art Grant, a no-strings-attached $500 stipend to go toward selected artists’ creative practices. With over 300 applicants, it was difficult to narrow it down to only two artists. this year’s jurors were epiphany and tim (MNA cofounders) and last year’s grant winners, emma mckay ryan and josh johnson. one artist that successfully combined two and three-dimensional art was Noah Thomas Miller.
i plan on using this Nice Art Grant to explore the middle ground between painting and sculpture, and how to blend the lines of the two even more so. Part of the funds are also being used to help step out and exhibit more places along the Mississippi River pipeline.
Noah Thomas Miller is Illinois-born but finds himself working all the way down to Memphis. He works in multivalent mediums, whether that be woodworking, film, sound installation, or a combination of materials, to preserve memory and tell stories. He attended Memphis College of Art and has continued his practice through work with museums, film programs, art institutions, and most importantly at home. The primary work he makes is about the places that house us, which he builds out of the same materials that are used in the construction of buildings (plywood, plaster, wood glue & screws). But when he's not painting & making, you can find him documenting his family's art practices, or playing cassettes on the radio.
congrats, noah!
